L\'antroterapia, tipica sauna naturale (6)
Thermal treatment practised on Ischia are: mud therapy, balneotherapy (carried out either individually in baths or collectively in pools), cave therapy and inhalation therapy. Other therapies such as massage or medical gymnastics can also be added to make these therapies more effective and long-lasting.

MUD BATHS Therapeutic mud is made by mixing argilla with spa water. It is used by applying packs on the body or parts of the body which need treatment. The mud used on Ischia is usually of volcanic origin, an argilla created by volcanic activity together with vegetable and animal micro-organisms, algae, humus and humo-mineral compounds. Volcanic muds contain more organic substances than others.

Another characteristic of the Ischia spas is that there is a greater intensity level of radioactivity in the mineral water used to make the mud. Mineral waters on Ischia have a high mineral salts content and are very hot, unlike other radioactive waters found on the earth.
There are different types of mud. Natural mud is argilla and water mixed naturally. Prepared mud is made by allowing the argilla to ferment in the mineral water.

The mud is spread on the part of the body prescribed up to a thickness of 10-12 cm at a temperature of around 47C. It is usually left on for 20-30 minutes, depending on the doctor's prescription and the general conditions of the patient. Then, the mud is wiped off and the patient is washed, sometimes in mineral water. After that, the patient must relax for 30-60 minutes. The patient will continue to perspire until the 'reaction' time has finished.

BATHS A thermal bath is an optional after mud treatment and consists of the full immersion of the patient in mineral water, either in an individual bath or in a pool. The temperature of the water can vary according to the spring and the therapy from 37-38C. The length of the bath is 15-20 minutes long.

Please remember that thermal baths must be had on an empty stomach and a cycle varies from 12 to 21 baths, according to medical prescription. It is best to take four to five baths and then have a day without any. If symptoms such as tiredness appear the baths should be suspended and taken up again after a few days.

SHOWERS Thermal showers consist of overhead sprays or jets of mineral water which can be adjusted for temperature and pressure. They can be used together with other therapies or alone. Overhead showers apply a light massage to the skin, while the adjustable jet ones are often called underwater ones because they are applied to the patient while already fully immersed in water in the bath or pool.

CAVE THERAPY Although the name may sound alarming, this treatment is simply a short time (from 10 to 60 minutes) spent in natural caves whose temperature is higher due to the vicinity of hot springs. The caves are either dry - with temperatures up to 70 C - or humid, where the presence of vapours coming from the mineral springs have a temperature of between 30 and 40C.

Sauna naturale (36)
These caves are actually saunas or Turkish baths created by Nature! The time of reaction to the treatment may vary according to the nature of the cave. Cave Therapy may be used in addition to mud or bath treatments to maximise their effect. The biological effects are a sudden intense perspiration (which helps osmosis) and a raising of the body temperature which favours the cardiocirculatory and respiratory apparatuses.

INHALATION THERAPY Uses the following techniques: inhalation, aerosols, humages and sprays, techniques which act directly on the respiratory system. Mineral waters come into contact with the respiratory tract in concentrations suitable for each particular type of therapy.
Inhalation consists of dividing the particles of the mineral water which are then jet sprayed (sometimes with pharmaceuticals added and dissolved in the vapour) into the respiratory tract. The use of the aerosols is relatively new and consists of intense fragmentation of the water and medicine to be inhaled. Humages (or emanations) are gases which spontaneously release mineral waters. The mineral waters may also be used in gynaecological treatments. Vaginal washes produce beneficial effects on the female genital apparatus. The method is the same as that described for inhalation therapy.

PHYSIOTHERAPY The connection between physiotherapy and thermal treatment has been a close one since ancient times. The Romans practised light gymnastics at the baths. The Ischia spas unite physiotherapy and thermal treatment in order to offer patients a complete treatment. Massotherapy consists of the mechanical action of the masseur's hands (or electric apparatus) provoking biological effects directly on the whole body on the zone or in which the mechanical action has taken place.
Friction is a more energetic movement in massage. The masseur's hands 'squeeze' the tissues, consequently eliminating metabolic waste from the tissues. Using the baths allows some gymnastic movements to be carried out more easily since the water makes the body lighter and allows movements which would otherwise be impossible. The beneficial effects of alternate hot and cold baths are also well known. If all the physical effects of the physiotherapy and thermal treatment are considered together you can imagine what health benefits they bring. A complete cycle of treatments - always stipulated by a doctor - of 2-3 weeks' long restores the body, making it agile and healthy.
